Beyond the reflection
An unclassifiable and resolutely visionary artist, Piotr Barsony has, for several decades, developed a body of work in which the history of art, science, mythology, and humanism intertwine. His universe—both rigorous and playful—opens unexpected bridges between disciplines and invites a sensitive re-reading of our relationship to the world. With Beyond the Reflection, Barsony invites audiences to cross the surface of images and explore their hidden depths. This exhibition unfolds a collection of works in which the artist probes what lies behind appearances—within that discreet zone where memory, symbol, and intuition converge.

“These compositions, precise yet infused with mystery, operate as reversible doubles: they reveal as much as they conceal, they illuminate as much as they unsettle. For me, reflection is never mere duplication—it is transformation, a shift, a displacement of certainties.” — Piotr Barsony

By revisiting universal forms, Barsony exposes their tensions and fragility, while revealing their enduring evocative power. In his work Numberman, he reinterprets the myths of Superman and Spiderman to create his own hero—a face composed of numbers—a metaverse symbol of the world to come.

In 1979, Barsony created The Ideal Woman in support of Iranian women’s struggles. This sign-like painting of a female nude was duplicated as stickers and placed across major world capitals as a logo of protest.

“Each work becomes a threshold—where the visible meets the invisible, where history encounters imagination, where sameness opens onto otherness. By revisiting universal icons, Barsony reveals their shadows, contradictions, and their timeless power of evocation. Every piece thus becomes a space for interpretation—an invitation for the viewer to suspend their gaze, question their own certainties, and embrace the mystery at the heart of all living art.” — Muriel Studnia
